Mac, I am not sure when it was built. I do know that the building we used for the club, and the skeet houses, were constructed well before I arrived in 84, and had not been used in some time. When I realized we actually had them, I bugged the MWR folks to let us use them. (I had shot tournament skeet in Misawa for four years, and really missed it.)
It took some time, but eventually MWR said okay, and we repaired the machines. After we had it up and running, we held a base tournament to kick off the opening. It turns out they still had quite a few shotguns in the armory that belonged to the R&G, and we put them to good use.
If I remember correctly, if you walked down to the beach from base housing, and and still facing the water looked to your left, you could see the range.
In 1971, the old rod and gun club on the road to the base beach was closed, and the R&G was moved to what used to be the Airman's Club. I was a part-time bartender at the R&G. I also remember swing-mid break commander's call being held at the R&G. Boy that was a while back!
The skeet range was built self-help in 70-71 by the R&G members. It was busy most weekends, especially when we held Greek/American shoots with the locals. Some of the shotguns they showed up with were antiques, but these guys could sure shoot. The after meet cookouts were absolutley amazing.;) Thom
From what I rember the Rod&Gun club was there in 62-65, my dad was a regular there, also i shot skeet there in 70-73 with my mom's 20 gauge, it was down the road from the beach house going to the new base housing on the left side next to the water. mike thomas 62-65,70-73
