Hi All,

Just stumbled upon this site as I was doing some scouting for a possible business trip there. It is hard to believe that after all these years, some of my best memories were being stationed at Iraklion AS.

This was to have been my 3rd assignment in my 20 year career and probably the best one, especially coming from RAF Molesworth as a GLCM Warrior.

My children, who had beem born in Iraklion while I was stationed there, took a vacation back to Crete about a year ago. After seeing the photos they sent me, I could tell much has changed. They were allowed to go on the old base and take photos and the buildings looked very run down and empty.

I am proud to have been a part of the 7276th SPS and think back to all the people we helped and lives we saved with our "Gate Call" emergency assistance service. As a cop, this was probably one of the most unique missions I have ever had to do and I will always remember my time in Crete.

Regards,

TSgt, (Ret) "Big" Ed Sharp

Welcome to the site Ed!

I also think of Crete as my most unique assignment! I had a blast, and just thinking about my time there brings a smile to my face.

From all I have read, and from the photos I have seen, it is definately not the same Crete we knew.

That's okay though, the Crete we knew lives on here

Cheers......................Dave.

Great site. Was the SP NCOIC 76-79 and consider it the best assignment I had during my 27 year career. I retired in 87 and from 82-87 was heavily involved in GLCM as the AFOSP GLCM policy guy.

MSgt Gould, I remember you. I arrived in 77 and left in 78. You were NCOIC of SP Ops with Capt. Karst Police Chief. Do you still have those stories we use to write and slip under your door. I still have copies of them. I became one of your Flight Chiefs when SSgt. Burkhalter rotated back to the states. While I was there I worked for/with SSgt/TSGT Drake, TSgt/Msgt Sivak. When I became Flight Chief after the big Investigation I took leave and traveled Europe and put SSsgt JJ Jackson in charge of the Flight. Hope you remember me. It is great to see you found the site. contact me: (tigerz126@hotmail.com)

Well, MSgt (I thought it was SMSgt, but memory fades at times) Gould. It's great to find you. I had some of the most amazing times of my life at IAS. Got there as a Sgt, in spite of myself made SSgt. Became a Flight Sgt in my final year there. Tour from 78-81. Let's see, memories. First night on patrol had a troop losing it on the third floor, burning their Flight Flag in the hallway, Fought dear ol "Big George" through 4 bus stops in Hersonissos. Too many tragic car crash investigations. Later had a great and damned unusual career. Basically due to three people. Two were four stars who taught me a lot, and you. I was an ass and didn't accept rules too well. I walked into your office and tossed my badge on your desk several times. You didn't fire me once, just let me vent, patted me on the head and sent me out to get it right. Later, a lot of good men worked for me and they benefited from your lessons. Never got the chance to say "thanks", so here goes, Who ever taught you, taught you well and I appreciate all the lessons you gave me. So, Thanks. Hope this finds you well. By the way, sorry about that fake report that made it to the Base Commanders desk. Funny now, wasn't then.

Hey Jim Ratliff, this is CMSgt (ret) George Gould. Your post made my day. I remember you well and, you'll probably be surpirsed to know, not unfondly. Glad to hear you did well. Drop me a line--georgegould08@comcast.net. I'ld love to hear what happened to you in the 30 years since we served together. Thanks for taking the time to say thanks. It means a lot. George.
