LOOKING FOR I am from Philly and I was assigned from 1959/61 to the 6930th. If anyone knows the where-abouts of: Chester Monroe (Detroit, MI) Leon & Henry Bandy from (VA). Genero Mitchell (Phila. PA). William Birdwell - He was from down south. Jack White and his wife and son came some time in 1960 and another son was born there. Otto Von Zonger (mis-spelled last name) Travor was a medic. Little Billy, J. C. Mister and Wheat are names I remember. There was 2 Greek Police Officers assigned to the mail gate: "Nick" last name unknown. He was an interpreter and with him was John Popadigee (misspelled last name) Two brothers' who owned the cab company and we called them Big George and Little George. I also remember a lady "Mary" who was the telephone operator on the base. Bill Bailey was from somewhere in California. I took tons of photos while stationed there but some wise guy broke into my car in Detroit and took the album. If anyone out there know how to contact any of these guys please give them my email address. [ Submitted by U. S.] | Posted by DavidR on Saturday 25 July 2009 - 15:36:13 | |
Found Greek Friend Arrived home from work today and there was a certified letter from Iraklion Crete from Leonidas Titomichelakis who I have been searching for for years. All I had was a first name and I tried the Embassy, Souda Bay, and a Greek Newspaper. It is unclear to me still how he found me but I was ecstatic. I am going to Crete next year so I will visit him. Thanks Dave for having this site so I could share the news with everyone. Leonidas worked on base doing landscaping and we became great friends. IAS in 3D For anyone who is interested you can visit a virtual 3D version of IAS by visiting this site: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/cldetails?mid=77f8851dd56e6f594e9e83dc441c1732&ct=mdcc In the wake of my recent retirement I discovered Google's 3D drawing application - Sketchup. Having never used a CAD-type drawing before, I became facinated with what could be done. I began to draw a couple of IAS facilites such as the Pound and Chow Hall. I couldn't stop with that. Now I have recreated some 12 different structures on base with more likely to come. They were all drawn in their 1965 configuration. You can view these 3D models by downloading a free viewer from Google at: http://sketchup.google.com/download/gsuviewer.html or the free Sketchup program itself at the same url. I have submitted these models to Google for consideration of inclusion in Google Earth. I am awaiting their answer. However, if you wish to view these models in the Google Earth setting you can place each one in your copy of Google Earth. It is quite a sensation to virtually cruise the old base. I have attached a screen shot view of the Airmen's Club patio view depicting the nostalgic view of the Ferry Boat Iraklion passing near Dragon Island and Olympic airlines landing at Iraklion at dusk.
